Saint Joseph, Patron Saint.
Patron of the Universal Church
Feast day: March 19, May 1
Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, was not a rich man.
In those days, carpenters were not as well-off as their modern counterparts.
When Joseph took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised, and Mary to be purified, he offered a humble sacrifice of two turtledoves. Such a small gift would only be offered by a family unable to afford the pricier offering of a lamb (Luke 2:24).
Despite his humble means, Joseph came from royal lineage. The Gospels make mention of his descent from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38).
We read that the angel, who first informs Joseph of the Messiah to be born unto Mary, greets the newly appointed foster father as "Son of David." A royal title, reserved almost exclusively for Jesus in Gospel accounts.
